Alteration expectations

Rosario, on April 20, 2022 at 2:58 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 7
Hey everyone! I want wedding dress shopping next weekend and felt 99% good about a strapless dress. Only problem is, I really don’t like a strapless dress on me. My bridal stylist is out of town but I’m going to ask her about making the following alterations: lower the back to about mid back, add straps, make the sweetheart neckline a pointed sweetheart neckline.

Has anyone made these kind of alterations? What kind of expectations should I set for myself for alterations to a strapless? I’m wondering if I should just keep looking since my wedding is still a good 13-months away.

Can’t figure out how to edit my post, but i made a few typos: “I went wedding dress shopping LAST weekend.”

I'm no seamstress but those sound like difficult alterations to make after the dress is ordered, as strapless gowns have a lot of structure and boning to keep them in place. However since most dresses are custom ordered, it may be possible for her to order it the way you would like it. My sister liked a strapless gown and the designer allowed for an option to order it with straps.

I completely agree! (As a non seamstress haha). Appreciate your input here.

I worked as a bridal consultant for 3.5 years. Everything you’re talking about for alterations sounds reasonable to me- we did similar alterations all the time. Depending on the designer of the dress, you might be able to order the changes custom, but it’s certainly not required- a good seamstress is unlikely to have any issues with what you’re asking for. Do you have any pictures of the dress? That would better inform any advice I have, but in general, I would say you should be fine!

You have plenty of time! Keep looking for the perfect dress. Alterations are expensive enough as it is. I found a gorgeous halter top. That’s an option for you if you want some kind of strap or maybe a one shoulder strap.

I think you should keep looking…There has to be a dress out there that is closer to your vision than your current situation. Good luck!
