Allergy sore throat advice?

Kari, on June 8, 2021 at 1:55 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 2 8

So my allergies have not been bad at all recently, but within the past few days I've developed a sore throat and ear ache from them. The past few days have been really hot which I think is making my allergy symptoms (which have been mild to non-existent this year) worse, and I also was testing out some aerosol based hair products this weekend which I'm sure didn't help.

Our wedding celebration is this weekend, and I'd really prefer to feel 100% on the day. If I take allergy medicine it makes me really drowsy at first and it never mixes well with alcohol (puts me right to sleep), so I don't want to start taking it just a few days before our wedding. I've honestly felt fine most of the year up until this point, so the timing is really unfortunate.

Does anyone have any advice/at home remedies for soothing a sore throat caused by allergies/environmental pollutants? I don't want to worry about drug side effects or whether or not I can drink at my wedding.

If you have a super sore throat something I always use (I was a vocal music major) is hot jello with honey. Get a box of sugar free jello mix and add some honey and the recommended amount of water (but make sure its hot) and drink it like you would a tea. The gelatin and honey always sooth my throat super fast.

Gargle with salt water for a day or two prior, it will reduce the swelling in your throat and nasal passages. If you can use a neti pot, that will also help a lot. If you use the neti pot, do it a few hours before the ceremony and before makeup since it’s a little drippy after (that’s all the congestion and swelling going down!)

I would get on Flonase ASAP (so you can skip it on your wedding day). My husband’s doc recommended Flonase before bed for an allergy sore throat— reason being that the sore throat is often caused by post nasal drip overnight! So, treating the cause is important too

Otherwise, I swear by a salt water gargle for a sore throat, and drinking lots of green tea with a whole bunch of lemon and honey

You can take allegra. It’s non-drowsy so it might help you!

I work at an urgent care and also have the worst allergies, one of our providers told me that when I get bad symptoms, to take zyrtec, flonase and mucinex and it usually knocks it right out. But if you don't want to take any meds, I also have done the hot jello with honey that someone else suggested from when I sang regularly or I did hot tea with lemon and honey.
