Alaskan Cruise

Courtney, on January 18, 2017 at 2:17 PM Posted in Alaska Planning 0 15

It's been awhile since I've been on! Congrats to all the newly engaged and newly weds I have missed!

So originally DH and I had planned on doing a Caribbean cruise for our anniversary (when we were still living in KY) but we have since then recently moved to the west coast for his new job and are now considering doing an Alaskan Cruise instead!

Has anyone done an Alaskan Cruise? When is the best time to go? Any tips or recommendations or must see's? Any advice or recommendations are appreciated! I would guess we would have to depart from Seattle, WA.

I have!! We just went on one at the end of September and it was WONDERFUL! We live in Seattle so the departure was very easy (2 mile uber from the house lol) We booked ours on Holland Cruise through AAA and got a great deal on a 7 day cruise, they give you lots of bonus stuff for booking with them too, so I highly recommend doing it that way! As for time frame we went the last week of Sept and it was the last week of cruise season in Alaska so all the ports had AMAZING sales because they were shutting down after we left. I would say that if you are going to book any excursions the 2 that I recommend are the glacier and tram tour in Juneau and the Lumberjack show in Ketchikan. Also a tip that I have is to always eat in the main dining room versus the Lido deck buffets, we ate on Lido for breakfasts and that was fine but for dinner the dining room pretty much has the same food if not better and its all brought right to you and still free! Personally for me the drink packages were not worth it as I knew I would not be drinking 2-3 every day (I had a drink on the boat maybe once every other day, I am not much for alcohol though) Go and see a few of the shows at night, you are on the boat anyways so might as well see one, they are really good! Play Bingo, not only is it fun but I actually won twice on our cruise! Covered all my on board purchases with the money I won. Last tip, wait till the last day to buy anything from the jewelry shop as that is when they will go on sale big time. Hope this helps, any questions please feel free to ask! Smiley smile

I've been been on several Alaskan cruises, but it has been a while. I LOVE the Alaskan cruise. I've been with several cruise lines and liked Norwegian the best. I recommend doing excursions rather than just walking around the port. We've loved dog mushing, glacier viewing, & riding the train through the Yukon. My favorites are always the whale/animal watching boat trips.

Awesome! We have AAA so we would probably book through them. I've heard a lot of good things about Norwegian. We would definitely prefer to see and do as much as we could so we would love to find excursions to book! Juneau and Ketchikan for sure, we'd also like to stop somewhere in British Colombia as well probably. We're thinking at least 7 days

I just went on an Alaska cruise from Seattle this past September. I went with my FH and 6 friends and we had a blast. We cruised with Princess which I would definitely recommend, or Celebrity. These are nicer than the other cruise lines.

You'll have so many options for excursions at the different stops and you can hardly go wrong with any of them. The towns are so quaint and scenic. Our favorite thing we did was a helicopter ride onto a glacier in Juneau. So awesome! We also really enjoyed a zodiac boat trip in Ketchikan. We saw whales, sea otters, and eagles, it was very cool. They let you drive you own boat, too!

If you want to be more comfortable, temperature-wise, go in the summer. It will be chillier in April, May, and September.

Oh, and my advice would be to definitely get the drink package on the cruise. I didn't and my FH did and I ended up making him get me drinks all the time off of his package because they were really expensive individually and we drank a lot.

I went on an Alaskan cruise as a teen so I have no clue what it's like to go as an adult, let alone as a newlywed, but I remember the landscape being absolutely breathtaking. Photos did not even come close to doing it justice and being surrounded by mountains was surprisingly awesome, even to my 16-year-old self. We stopped in some of the smaller port towns (Ketchikan is one I recall) and did things like visited old gold mines, salmon hatcheries... things you wouldn't really just stumble upon many other places. I wish I had been an adult so I could have fully appreciated it!

I just went this past summer with my parents and FH, and that is actually where FH proposed! We went the last week in July and also out of Seattle. Our ship was the Crown Princess through Princess cruise line and our ports were Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan, with one day cruising through Glacier Bay, and the last port before returning to Seattle was Victoria, Canada. We went on a whale watching your, the train ride through the old Yukon Route, and a helicopter tour that lands on a glacier where you get out and have a guided walking tour of it (this is where FH proposed!). It seriously was one of the best trips I've been on, everything was absolutely gorgeous. As a PP said, we also didn't do the drink package as we weren't going to drink enough to make it worth it. We were each given $150 in ship credits when we booked the cruise, so we used that towards a couples massage. Like any trip, definitely check what the weather will be like before you leave. The week before we went it was sunny and in the 70s/80s, and the week we were there was in the 50s/60s and raining/misting. Also agree with PP about eating in the dining room for dinner and the buffets for breakfast/lunch, and they have a lot of good entertainment after dinner so hit up a show or two!

I loved my cruise to alaska! We went on celebrity and left out of seattle and went to Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway.

Definitely go to mendinhall glacier in Juneau and if you are able, take the 2 mile walk out to wear the waterfall is...you get so much closer to the glacier and its beautiful!

June and July are the best times to go, although it's cheaper in May and August. The weather can be unpredictable so be sure to bring warm clothes and a rain jacket and umbrella.

My avatar picture is us in Alaska in September Smiley smile We did a Princess cruise and it was AMAZING. I highly recommend September time. Skip land tours if you can, it was rough, but once we got on the boat it was the most relaxing trip I have been on!

I would recommend going with the salmon are jumping (is that what it is called?) We missed it by a couple of weeks and it would have been great to see. Also, invest in sea-sickness bands or patches. Personally, I like the bands better. My family doesn't usually get sea sick, but everyone except for me got sick headed to Alaska, between the ports is easy though! And by everyone, I mean the ship sold out of sea sickness stuffs!

I don't remember much of what we did because I was a teen when we went, but I liked the blue glaciers/ice whatever that my mom woke me up at 4am for since that when the ship was near it.

ETA: You can leave from San Francisco too, its just more days at sea. Just depends on your preference Smiley smile

Following! We literally just booked our honeymoon Alaskan cruise last week. This has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember! We booked on Princess, Ruby Princess I think is our boat. Leaving from Seattle on July 1. A friend worked for 15 years as a cruise director so she's given us some good suggestions for excursions and such (helicopter tour to the glacier being at the top of the list). Want to see some sled dog teams also, being an Alaskan Malamute mom and all Smiley smile

Also going on the Alaska cruise and using Princess! I was wondering did all PP's bring a passport if you were departing and returning to Seattle? Cruise line lady on the phone said it wasn't necessary since we weren't flying home but just wanted to see what everyone else did!
