Alaska Honeymoon Tips/ideas

Jennifer, on December 22, 2016 at 8:37 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 7

My SO and I decided to go to Alaska on our honeymoon in July! Instead of a cruise, we are planning to fly into Anchorage and drive south to Girdwood and then Seward, each for a few days. Anyone suggest any other cities or recommend what we should do? Also, should we plan to stay more than 1 night in Anchorage or is most of the fun stuff in the smaller cities? Thanks!

Checkout Hotel Alyeska, you may find you never want to leave.

Not much to do in Seward, but plenty to see around it. Dedicate one day for a whale watching trip out of Seward.

Alyeska hotel would be an obvious one if you are going to Girdwood. It's a ski resort but its a nice place year round with great hiking and a tram to the top of the mountain. There is a restaurant at the top of the mountain that I think is open year round. I will say I always recommend anyone coming to visit go on a tour or at least a small cruise (maybe just a sight seeing one , like a Portage Glacier cruise or a Kenai Fjiords tour) There really isn't a city that is easy to explore on your own and you could easily go your whole trip to Alaska without seeing a single moose, much less any bears, whales etc. if you strike out on your own. In the area you are going the most popular places to check out would be exit glacier, the Alaska Sea Life Center, the Musk Ox Farm, and Alyeska (like I mentioned above). If you want to go north you could go on a bus tour to Denali National Park- that's where you are going to see all of the animals.

As far as Anchorage goes, that's where I grew up and am currently hanging out for Christmas. You could find stuff to do for a few days if you are so inclined but there is nothing really must-see around here. The Alaska Native Heritage Center is pretty neat if you are interested in history and culture. You could also check out the Anchorage Museum, but if you are already from a place with a lot of great museums its not too special. Other places you could check out: The Alaska Zoo, Earthquake Park, a trolley tour downtown, Campbell Creek Science Center (Includes an actual science center but the best part is the trails), Eagle River Nature Center (more trails), Flattop Mountain (more hiking) The best part about Anchorage is probably the hiking, which you can find anywhere in Alaska. I just looked up things to do in Anchorage to see if I was forgetting anything and the majority of stuff is just outside of Anchorage. So, overall, I hope you two like hiking!

Thanks for ya'lls input! Our current plan is to take a Jet Ski glacier tour out of Girdwood and stay at Hotel Alyeska. Then do a Dog Sled tour out of Seward! I was looking at going North instead of South, do you think there's more to do if we go North?

I would suggest a tour of Denali national park. They only let tour buses pass a certain point. That is where you are mostly likely to see bears, caribou and their ilk. I even saw a wolf there once.

We had our elopement in Alaska a few months ago! I've been to Alaska a few times, but this was DH's first time and he loved it. We stayed at Alyeska the entire time and literally did NOT want to go home

Definitely check out the hotel even if you don't stay there. The tram ride up is 25$ I think (free pass if you stay at the hotel and there is a nice restaurant called Seven Glaciers) Although I would highly recommend checking out the Double Musky in Girdwood, we had a sirloin steak right after our ceremony and omg I can't even begin to tell you how good it was. We also went to Seward for an ocean kayaking/hiking excursion. Super fun, but if you aren't in decent shape, it can wear you out. If you head towards Seward, check out Exit Glacier. You can take a short hike up to it or you can choose to do the full excursion to the Harding Ice Field (also be in good shape cause it's strenuous)

Denali is beautiful, a bit of a drive from Girdwood, so you'd need to stay the night there if you decide to go, but the bus tours are really cool. Seward Highway in general is a beautiful drive and so many places to stop and just look out and enjoy the view. You'll probably get to see the belugas passing through too!

I grew up in Girdwood! Its a fantastic town. Some of our family friends actually own the Musky. Alyeska is the absolute best place to stay and there's a lot of things to do in and around the town. Contact the concierge office there and they can suggest some activities. The glacier tour is great, there's lots of hiking and fishing around there, too. It really depends on what you guys are interested in doing. Seward has some fun tours (sea kayaking, whale watching, etc). There's ATV tours in Girdwood, too.

Anchorage is a larger town and has a lot of tourist things. Google things to do and you shouldn't be disappointed!

ETA: Also, pack your bug spray. Mosquitoes are awful. Also, at that time of year, it's basically light/twilight all night. I suggest Tylenol PM...but that's just what I do when I go home to visit.

While in Denali you should do a white water rafting trip!!!!

Fairbanks/ North Pole area is a great place to visit also. North Pole is a small town where it's Christmas 365 days a year and Santa Claus house is a must place to visit.
