Alaska honeymoon in covid era

Brittany, on September 14, 2020 at 10:52 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 3
My fiance and I originally wanted to do an African safari honeymoon but then decided international is too risky during the COVID era (not necessarily because the countries are high risk, but the constantly changing regulations).
Has anyone done Alaska recently? Their current regulation just requires a negative test within 72 hours, which sounds reasonable. Would flights between Alaska and the main land ever stop if things got worse again? Want to make sure we wouldn't get stuck. COVID aside, what is the best time of year to go and best things to do? We're getting married in January but likely wouldn't go immediately regardless of destination

My husband went to AK in July 2020. The testing requirements are really keeping Alaska and their tourists safe.

As far as flights, corporations are really being fair and reasonable on cancellations - any destination. I would skip trying for save $1 going thru Travelocity or a broker but I would have no reservations about booking direct with an airline and feeling good about any type of cancellation, should the need arise. And honestly, travel is booking super cheap flight now.
My husband and I have been to AK. We've only ever been in "summer." Last summer, we went right after 4th of July. We rented a car and hopped our way around and stayed at AirBnB's along the way. It was perfect for us, leaving out of Anchorage. We did things like moose sighting in Kincaid park, a bear excursion out of Homer, a helio hike on Knik Glacier, visited a lot of breweries and wineries, drove thru Hatchers Pass and Kenai, took a cruise around several glaciers out of Whittier. We took a flight down to Juneau for another 3 days. We canoed and went whale watching from there.
My advice to anyone considering Alaska : Go when you're physically able. The best way to see Alaska is to hike and kayak it. And there are very easy hikes and canoe trips with the most spectacular views. There's so many road side stops to jump out and walk to. And the food - simply the best. Pack plenty of dry clothes/shoes or select accommodations with laundry!
There are some small towns, all across America that are suffering or experiencing closures as tourism has been hit the hardest during this pandemic and that includes AK. Husband was there to fish this summer and "not everything was open for business." Good news is: the views, nature and wildlife are margionally unphased by COVID. If you've managed to plan a wedding thru this all, then I know you're totally able to roll with whatever the conditions look like and accommodate your trip in 2021.
Pinterest was a great resource to find the little gems like the best bakery in town. A lot of reviews of trails exist to give you guidance on difficulty of terrain and TIME of hike which I found most useful. As with any trip, plan in "weather days" in case your activities are cancelled.
Best of luck!A big part of my heart is in AK. Here's a few pics from our trip. Alaska honeymoon in covid era 1
