Alaska Cruise Honeymoon

Kristina, on March 24, 2016 at 9:44 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 24

FH and I have been talking about our honeymoon for a while. We were going back and forth between an Alaska Cruise or Wyoming. We have finally made the decision to go on an Alaska Cruise. Now we just have to find the right one. Does anyone have any recommendations on cruise lines? Has anyone been on an Alaska Cruise, what were some things you liked or didn't like? Thanks in advanced!!

I have zero recommendations but I just wanted to say I'm so jealous! That's what we wanted to do, but the last cruises leave before our honeymoon will start. Boo.

My friend recommended Cruise Critic to me, we were using that before we changed our plans totally. You could check that out and see if it has anything helpful for you.

We always talk about doing that, so I am also jealous. One day! I know they always recommend doing the Illusion Islands and I think the Inside Passage. Have fun!!

If you're prone to motion sickness I definitely recommend picking a cruiseline itinerary that takes the inside passage. I took a 7-night Alaska cruise with Princess on the Island Princess.

I went on the princess Alaskan cruise a few years ago. We went in September on the very last trip the boat takes before it makes the trek over to Asia. The boat started in Anchorage and ended in Vancouver.

We stopped at 3 ports - Skagway, Juneua, and Ketchikan. These were very charming towns with cool excursions in each. We also had a few scenic cruise days through Glacier Bay which was beautiful.

I've been on Princess cruses three times. And my parents many more than that. The food is great, the ship is nice, and the staff are very friendly and accomodating.

If you have time - give yourself a couple days in Vancouver at the end -- we even took a bus from Vancouver and went to Seattle for a couple days to end our trip. I LOVED seattle.

I will say that we went in early September and the MAJORITY of people on the ship - i'm talking 98% of people were over the age of 65. Obviously the honeymoon is for you and your FH but if you want to be around a younger crowd I suggest you go during the summer.

If you have specific questions let me know I'd be happy to help!

Been thinking about this myself, apparently late May early June is ideal for Alaska. I got sea sick on the Caribbean cruise we went on though.

LOVED my Alaska cruise when I went a few years ago. We did Carnival, and it was good. If I went again, I would probably try Princess or Norwegian just because I prefer them. I wasn't paying at the time, so I didn't complain. But the atmosphere on Alaska cruises is completely different than Caribbean ones. Everyone is more laid back, and theres not a party vibe going on. Which was nice for me, personally. We did Skagway (which was boring), Juneau, Sitka, and Kecthican. They were all equally stunning, and beautiful. I would encourage you to go whale watching if you can. We waited too late, and all the tours sold out. =( But it looked like a lot of fun.

We're taking Norwegian at the end of June for our honeymoon cruise to Alaska, they had the BEST deals like ALL OUR ALCOHOL FOR FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

If you have a Costco membership take a look at their travel site they also have great deals with some of the cruise lines, like at one point Royal Caribbean was one person full fare second half fare. Just look Smiley smile

I went on an Alaskan cruise with Royal Caribbean about 10 years ago. It was amazing. I was a teenager at the time, so I didnt fully appreciate everything, but I would love to go back.

Norwegian is my favorite cruise line in general. They seem to have the best prices/offers, the food is great, I love the "freestyle dining" that allows you to eat at any time, and there are worthwhile onboard activities, plus the staff has been incredible on every NCL ship I've been on. I went to the Bahamas with some of my girlfriends as a graduation gift to ourselves after college, and we actually hung out with a few staff members on the ship when they were done with their shifts. just good people!!

    I also recommend cruise critic!

We are doing this in June for our honeymoon! We picked a cruise line based on our schedule and what we can afford. We are doing a land cruise, 4 days land and then 7 days cruise, fly into Anchorage and then out of Vancouver. We are going on Royal Caribbean and it seems to be reasonably priced. I think Royal Caribbean and Norwegian were similar in cost. Princess seemed a little more expensive but they have the most comprehensive set up in Alaska (they have their own resort hotels for the land tour). At the end of the day I have yet to hear someone say their Alaskan cruise was just meh... so I am sure whatever cruise line you pick it will be awesome! I am happy to hear others are doing this because we are almost looking forward more to our honeymoon than our wedding Smiley smile

I highly recommend cruise critic. You can find reviews of every ship, every port, most excursions, even specific rooms. Do take in consideration that you don't know much about the reviewer and that its' coming from their perspective, which might not be yours. Especially since the average Alaskan cruiser I think is a little on the older side. Travel agents can be helpful too with cruises especially if they have been on cruises themselves. I just figured out which ships had the schedule we wanted and shopped around... ended up buying directly from Royal Caribbean via phone because it was the best deal.

I have never cruised in Alaska, but I used to live in one of the towns that almost all of cruise ships stop in and the one thing people mentioned was trying to start in Anchorage versus Seattle because starting in Seattle means 2-3 days of boring at sea days. Generally I heard good things about Norwegian and Princess as well.

July is the best time to go to Alaska. I have family there and have been about 6 times. Be prepared for misty weather. You might get lucky with some sunshine, but it's very misty. I have not done the cruise. I feel the best way to do Alaska is to stay on land and experience the nature and peacefulness that comes along with it, but would like to experience all of the mainland some day. I have no suggestions on excursions because I don't think the cruise does any stops on Prince of Wales island, which is the island I am familiar with. If you can go whale watching and salmon fishing, I definitely recommend it!

LOVEDDDDDD our Alaskan cruise in June 2014. both of us consider it one of those life changing trips...

We did Holland America Line - and as a disclaimer the cruise was free (apparently we have a gambling problem and our hotel in Vegas sent us fo' free). We had the second largest suite you can get (the largest ones are absolutely CRAY CRAY) and if we had paid out of pocket we would have spent at least $12,000 on the trip. instead we had a $3,000 bar & excursion tab.

Started in Vancouver, cruised to Ketchikan where FH did a halibut fishing trip ($400) and I rode a trolley then got drunk ($40 counting beers at 9am). FH was thrilled with his trip and we STILL have halibut and cod in our freezer, going on two years now.

next stop was Juneau - helicopter ride and hike on Mendenhall Glacier for 2 hrs ($450pp). LIFE CHANGING OMG EXPERIENCE. just fucking WOW. I literally made a book on Shutterfly for the trip because of this experience.

Glacier Bay - this isn't a port, but the boat goes into this bay surrounded by glaciers. its around 8 am and it was another AMAZING part of the trip. woke up to drink my tea and when I walked onto the balcony it was just awesome.

next stop - Skagway- small town with shops that aren't ALL Diamonds International. local beer, food, etc. super cute place. did a train ride to White Pass. which is basically the gold route that takes you just inside Canada and the back to town. it was neat to see but nothing to die over.

final stop - get off boat in Seward and we took the scenic train to Anchorage. it was a longggg day.

Anchorage- we were there all damn day because of flight was after dinner time. luckily the world cup was on, so after wandering around town for a while we went to some bars for watch the US vs. Portugal game (ugh)

About the cruise line - Holland America Line ("HAL") is usually older people. Alaskan cruises are usually older people.... lol but if you want to relax on the ship that's great. I brought bathing suits and never used them. the food is good, room service is excellent! Spa was nice, entertainment is like other ships. casino is nice for being on a boat.

Weather - again, didn't even get in the pool. it is misty and in the 50s.

Sorry if there are spelling errors! let me know what else you need to know!

We went on an Alaskan cruise last May/early June. It's where future husband proposed. I would highly recommend princess cruises. We departed from Vancouver, stopped in Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway, with our final port being Anchorage.

The weather was phenomenal. It was sunny and sixties and fantastic. Our excursions included whale watching (so many whales!!!) and kayaking in the pacific (whoa!)

Pp are right, the age is predominately 60+, however FH and I had no problem meeting them, talking about their adventures and stories and it was a blast. Not to mention, the younger crowds tend to find one another on the excursions (although a 60 or so year old woman kayaked in a single kayak in the ocean, and I never thought someone was more of a badass).

I really hope you go through with it. It was absolutely incredible!

I haven't been on any of the cruises but a lot of the ships start or end here in Seattle. The Alaskan marine highway that many of the cruise ships take is supposed to be beautiful. I went to Petersburg and Ketchikan Alaska last year, both towns are in the inner passage of the AK marine highway--cruise ships go to Ketchikan all the time, it's s cute little town where salmon is king. One thing that's stands out more than anything is it IS COLD. Very cold in southeast Alaska. I want in April and it rained every day and even snowed.

I don't have very good pics it was foggy along the mountain ranges but this is in Petersburg.

We just decided on an Alaska cruise honeymoon as well! I've been doing a bunch of research and to save some $$ we will most likely go on the first cruise of the season in May. Cruise critic was mentioned already, but it is seriously the best if you are a big planner. Anything you would possibly want to know can be found on the forums. LOTS of people recommend Princess for Alaskan cruises (they can cruise Glacier Bay). We might actually go with Carnival's first sailing on 4/30 as the pricing is about $500 pp less than princess.
