Airbnb Wedding?

Laura, on February 24, 2019 at 1:52 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 2 13
My fiancé and I recently got engaged and really want to do the cheapest wedding ever. (Im a huge money stickler, seriously.) I’ve been researching venues in San Diego...ridiculous prices for a small, simple wedding. I researched and a friend of mine mentioned that she rented a house on AirBnB for her wedding. Any thoughts only the pros and cons of this idea?

Most air ban do not let you hold events there. Do to insurance. You can look cause some do, also look into a hall or a park.

There’s quite a few homes that allow small weddings around.

Hi Laura! I'm doing an Airbnb wedding as well. A huge pro is that usually these venues are MUCH cheaper than the typical venue! I started with a 10k budget, but now it's looking like we'll hit somewhere between 15-20k (yikes...)

Pros: Venue cost is cheaper, you have freedom to bring in your own choices of vendors, you can stay overnight with your wedding party, might not need to decorate as much if the Airbnb is already gorgeous, easy to get ready in Airbnb the day of and not have to travel to a separate venue

Cons: May need to hire additional waitstaff for dinner and such, might need to rent all your tables, chairs, linens, plates, utensils, etc., in close proximity to other homes so it might cause your reception to be required to end earlier in the night, possibly needing to rent outdoor restrooms because the Airbnb wants to limit foot traffic indoors.

While I don't think the fact that you need to pay for event insurance is a con, I feel like there may be more leg work to planning an Airbnb wedding because the owner might not have the same experience hosting a wedding as a typical venue does. But if you have the time and patience to work out these details on your own, it can be a great option! I was lucky and was able to find an Airbnb that has experience hosting weddings and events at their place, and they are offering me all the rentals I need, helping me to set up and clean up, and providing me with a DOC for my wedding. With all that said, I am super happy I went with an Airbnb venue and I think it's starting to get more and more popular.

I’m having a small wedding at the beach. We rented a large home for all of my guests to stay. We are using the home for our reception area. We have a bartender and a private chef coming over for the event. We didn’t skimp on anything (except I found my dress for 100 bucks) and the total came out to be $7000 for the whole thing. We included a day of coordinator, photographer, rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. (The rehearsal dinner is going to be a cookout in the backyard.)

As you see form previous posts lots of people do it! Just make sure the house knows you are hosting a wedding and you’re aware of any neighboorhoodnsound restrictions. Also, have a contract will the house onto of the Airbnb on that specifies they are aware of wedding and protects you from them changing their mind about allow the event last minute.

I would be super cautious about this. First, as mentioned, be absolutely sure the owner is aware of your plan and is willing to rent to you with the understanding that it is for a wedding. Be completely upfront about the size of the guest list and the services, etc., you're planning to bring in. Ask about parking and noise restrictions, etc. However, especially in So Cal, so many towns have restrictions against events in residential neighborhoods that you should be really cautious and do some checking about local restrictions (just because the property owner is okay with it doesn't mean the neighbors and/or association might not call the police on you the day of and get the event shut down). Finally, Airbnb gives its property owners a LOT of freedom to cancel on guests, so realize that a property owner can say yes right now, but then decide at any time that they don't want to rent to you. A week ago or so there was a bride on this forum who rented a property through VRBO (kind of similar), and then they cancelled on her 2-3 months before the wedding. You don't have a "contract" with an Airbnb owner (like you would with an actual wedding venue), you have a reservation, and they can basically cancel your reservation at any time -- with or without cause. Do you homework before you decide to go this route.

Look into parks, restaurant weddings, community centers, or state run venues. All carry way less risk than an airbnb and are set up to host an event. There are other ways to save money.

I'm doing an AirBnB wedding and it is so expensive! The house rental cost was fine but we need to rent absolutely everything:tent, silverware, bathrooms, linens, chairs. The cost of catering is also hefty because they need to rent serving dishes and stuff.

Do alot of research and budgeting before choosing to go this route. In hindsight, I would've gone with an event space that has all the basics: chairs and tables and then done the rest on my own.

Not cheaper. A house wedding is what we’d call a “from scratch” wedding, which means you need to bring in EVERYTHING. Every chair, every fork, etc etc. There’s a ton of small hidden expenses that really add up with these, though, it’s more doable if it’s a very small party. If you go this route GET A CONTRACT outside of Airbnb. Airbnb’s can cancel a reservation at anytime for no reason!

I'd check county & city regulations, most won't allow events. I'd look into places like VFW, or public parks.
