Accidentally booked honeymoon flight and hotel under married name

Chris, on March 23, 2018 at 5:33 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 17

I accidentally purchased our Bahamas honeymoon tickets under my name with my fiancee taking my name, but we're leaving right after the wedding and can't do the paperwork in time to match up. I called the airline and they said that if I bring the marriage certificate then I should be ok but they seemed unsure and I can't get a hold of anyone at the TSA for the life of me to confirm this. Has anyone else had this problem? Plus I think the wedding certificate has to be mailed out right afterwards. I'm so worried that we will have put all this money down the drain...

Not that this is the right move, but can you sign paper next week and expedite the passport and name change process? Unsure of the documents that you would need for this as I'm not changing my name.

Also - how much is another flight? Thats what I would do.

Oh no! Definitely keep trying to contact TSA because they are the ones that you have to worry about more so than the airline. I’m sure this has happened before to some other couples, so it’s not an unheard of accident. I hope you can work everything out!

Yea the marriage certificate once signed is turned in...so if your going right after the wedding you will not have it back in time. Which is probably why the person on the phone sounded unsure, they were wrong. I'd keep trying TSA. Idk how flights go but i don't see why they just can't update the travelers name on the tickets. You also can't expedite passport information prior to your trip because you need a valid marriage license to submit for a new passport under a new name.

What it signed is the marriage license...permission to marry. That is filed with some state office and then the certificate is mailed. Where I live it takes 3 weeks. Then the name needs to be changed. I wouldn't trust TSA, whoever you speak with won't be there day of flight.

I would plead with the airline to allow you to exchange the ticket or refund and re-buy. Other option is that fiancee goes to court before wedding for name change.

I accidentally put the wrong year for FH's birth date once and the airline customer service was able to change it on their end. Not sure if it's the same for names but might be. Also when did you buy the tickets? All airlines have a 24-hr period when you can cancel for free, then you could just rebook.

Tweet @AskTSA. They’re usually pretty good about getting back to people

My H booked a flight for me before we were married and he used an incomplete last name (my last name was ridiculously long and hyphenated, so I socially only go by the first name so he booked it only under my first last name, not the fully hyphenated one). We didn't discover this until we got to the airport and TSA almost didn't let me board.

The only other form of ID I had with my picture and only my first last name was my gym card! Thankfully I had that so he let me board.

For our return flights I had to spend a LOT of time on the phone with Delta customer service for them to change the name. It was a pain, but worth not being stuck or having to pay more to get a new ticket.

You should call right away and ask!

When did you do this? Did you do it directly with the airline or with a travel site?

TSA isn't going to be your big problem, but U.S. Customs and Boarder Patrol are going to be your bigger problem. If your name doesn't match they may not let you into your destination country (local boarder patrol) and US CBP may not let you back into the US. The US CBP website says to match the names on tickets and documents, but "If the names don't match, your travel carrier or the Transportation Security Administration may require additional documents to verify your identity before allowing you to board." https://www.cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-go/your-trip

I would suggest looking into what additional documents they say you need and possibly reach out to a local travel agent (I suggest AAA because thats where my mom works) and they should be able to help answer the specific questions and may know how and who to contact to ensure a smooth travel experience.

I suggest you need to be a little more persistent with the airline. Ask to speak to a supervisor, manager of customer relations, etc until you get the help you need. They are not going to lose money. You just want to re-book the ticket in the correct name. There is no reason they can't do this for you.

Also post on their Facebook page. It's amazing how motivated businesses are to resolve issues when they are public.

If you get nowhere, contact your local TV station consumer advocate.

Maybe photo copy your marriage license and before you send it out and any documentation of name changing or anything like that.

He can change his name now. He doesn't need a marriage certificate to do so. Look into that. Good luck

I’ve transferred tickets I’ve bought to another person before, so I’m sure that you can call the airline to get them to change the name to your maiden one.

Yes this! If you tweet or message TSA on Facebook they get back to you really fast. I’d call/Facebook message the airline and BEG for someone to either change the name or do a rebooking or something. I don’t know why they have that 24 hour change rule now anyway.
