Accessories Help: Belt, Sash, or None?

SLY, on June 28, 2021 at 1:35 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

Hello everyone!

I've been going back and forth trying to decide whether to wear a sash/belt or not with my dress(es). I would prefer something dainty if I went with a belt so that it doesn't chop up my torso so much if that makes sense! What would you all suggest? If it helps, I'll be wearing my mother's pearl & gold jewelry (earrings & necklace)

Here are the links to my previous posts that contain photos of my dresses!

Hi! I can't seem to access the 2nd link, but I love the dainty belt in the first photo of your first thread. It adds just enough visual interest without overpowering or chopping up your figure!

I like the belt idea especially because I think it would go so well with your dress

    Team no belt here!

I think belts on wedding dresses mostly make brides look wider, because they ruin the long silhouette of the dress by chopping the body in half with a straight line. I MUCH prefer the look of no belt on the back of your reception dress compared to having a belt on your ceremony dress. But I've also never seen a wedding dress that I feel was improved by the addition of the belt, so that's a personal bias.

If you did go for a belt, I think a dainty slender one like the one shown would be the way to go - definitely nothing wide or too blingy! The one shown is simple and just enough to add some definition and visual interest if you think you dress needs it, since the material is a smooth satin. I think you have the right idea about belts in general, so go with whichever speaks to you more.

Some thoughts - Since you have two dresses, you could do a belt for one and not the other. Or you could do a removable belt (like a separate piece not attached to the dress) and then make a game day decision, or have it on for some photos and not others.

I agree with Kari, I think it might break the line of the dress and draw the eye across rather than down, lengthening the body. If you did go for a belt, I'd pick something like the one you're wearing, or like these from etsy:

Thank you for all of your advice Kari! I def. think I'd do a detachable belt for one dress and not wear one for the other. I didn't think a wide belt would look good either, and since I'm so short, I didn't want to be all chopped up lol!!

I like the idea of having the belt in some photos and others without it as well! I think the day of, I'll have a better feeling of what I'm wanting and feeling my best in!

Thank you so much for your feeback, and for the thinks! I think something like the second and third photo is what I'm looking for in a belt! I especially like how the second one has it tied with a satin sash, so I would get both elements with it! I also like how they aren't even all the way across, and I feel like that gives it a little more dimension than the first one, which is more even on the edges. I'll def. check etsy out!

Yes, I like the satin sash at the back too! I haven't bought anything from those sellers, but there are lots of nice things on etsy, so I'd recommend a scrounge on there for sure Smiley smile
