Dedicated September 2022

a wealthy family member

What to do when you have a relative with money and they seem to just keep talking about the money they are putting forward for your wedding? I love my family, but one individual always seems to try to hold their money over other members of the family. In regards to registry they mention how much they have and reasserted the amount. Then mentioned the cost of the flight, the cost of the hotel (they insisted on a 5 star, our state only has one), a birthday gift they gave me this year as well as how much money they gifted me to go towards my wedding dress purchase. Money doesn't mean a lot to me, while I appreciate what it can do for you, other things are more important to me. Any tips on how to handle this graciously?

I would just let them do their thing. Not much you can say to change that behavior/attitude. Be gracious and thank everyone equally for any contribution in gift, wedding support or whatever else, no matter how big or small. In my experience those individuals are usually trying to improve their feelings of self worth or importance. If it’s obviously obnoxious to you, it will likely be for others too. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Most will see through it and ignore it as best as they can.

Always plan as if you don’t have that money and you only have your own income to work with. Also keep in mind that money comes with strings so you may not have final say if they donate money. Thank them for their generosity and decline their gift.
