'94 to '24: Alterations opinions?

Ruth, on February 22, 2024 at 11:38 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

I grew up seeing and occasionally trying on my mother's wedding dress. Therefore, it is THE dress-- the epitome of wedding dresses in my mind, and I can't wait to wear it on the most exciting day of my life! She bought it in France where she was living at the time, when my dad said he was coming, and they were getting married. "I can't stand it anymore," he said. "You have to have a big wedding," said her mother, and so she got her dress, flew home, and got married.

Anyway, I love it. But. I know it must look like it's from the 90's, even being as classic as it is. The 90's are back, right? But not the cringey 90's... I just need someone to tell me what they think they would alter on this dress, if they wanted to be sure it didn't look like Bill Clinton just got elected. Is it the sleeves? Does it even look like anything should be changed?

P.S. Pictures from the last time I tried it on, without the petticoat/crinoline thing.

It's a very chic dress, especially considering the era. If anything, you could take off the extra ruffles at the waist, I think if you bustled the dress with a French bustle it would still look good without those ruffles. I personally love the sleeves, and puffed sleeves combined with off the shoulder looks elegant rather than over the top.

I would remove the sleeves and change those ruffles at the back.

Yeah, it’s the sleeves and the back ruffles. If you remove that, I don’t think I could guess the era. How sweet that you get to wear your mom’s dress! ❤️

OK first of all, I absolutely love that you are going to wear your mother‘s dress! In terms of making it more modern, I would just alter the top half of the dress. Specifically, the scalloped neckline and the ruffles at the top of the dress; and also the bodice, where it comes down to a V at the waist. I think if you changed up the neckline and straightened out the waistline, it would be a really chic dress. I know some people suggested removing the ruffles from the back of the skirt, but I would leave them! It makes the dress unique and gives it personality. I think it’s the iconic detail of the dress that makes it recognizable as your mother’s.

I think just the sleeves are a bit too much. Otherwise, it seems a few adjustments after removing or altering the sleeves would work well. What's your mother think about doing some of the alterations like this?

Here's a website where some modifications to older dresses are shown

Also, AI recommended to alter or remove the sleeves as the main alteration.
