Southern U.S. Honeymoons

If you’d like to stay in the United States for your honeymoon or mini-moon, the South is a great place to visit. There are many honeymoon destinations in the South with fabulous weather, gorgeous scenery, amazing food, and fun attractions. From lively New Orleans to historic Savannah, there’s a honeymoon location for every type of couple in the Southern U.S.—and you don’t even need a passport!

Check out a few of our favorite honeymoon destinations in the South, and travel advice.

When to Go

We recommend visiting the South in the springtime, between March and May. The weather will be much milder than during the heat of summer, and gorgeous flowers will be in bloom. The fall may also be a good time of year to travel, but there is a risk of hurricanes during this season so be sure to take that into consideration when making your travel plans, especially to hurricane-prone areas like New Orleans and the Outer Banks. More landlocked cities like Nashville may be better to visit in the fall.

Where to Go

There are lots of incredible honeymoon destinations in the South, but these are a few of the most popular.

This South Carolina city has oh-so much to offer and is certainly one of our favorite honeymoon destinations in the South. We recommend starting with a walking tour of the city to explore all of the vast and unique history—there are even food tours where you can explore and sample cuisine from some of the world-renowned restaurants in the city. History buffs will want to check out the Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, the Fort Sumner National Monument, and Middleton Place. And for a super-romantic Charleston honeymoon experience, take advantage of the city’s waterfront location with a sunset boat cruise. If you’ll be staying for a while, you might also want to take a day trip or spend a few nights at one of the nearby beach destinations like Folly Beach or Kiawah Island—perfect for a bit of relaxation.

Couples who want a honeymoon that combines delicious food, incredible music, and lots of history should consider a Nashville honeymoon. Of course, with a nickname like Music City, country music fans will want to check out the Grand Ole Opry, the Ryman Auditorium, and the Country Music Hall of Fame. Historic sites like Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage and Belle Meade Plantation are also popular. And for those who like to get outdoors, Radnor Lake State Park and Centennial Park are must-visit locations. With no shortage of incredible nightlife, from bars to music venues and more, you and your new spouse will find lots of fun ways to spend your evenings!

New Orleans

Want your honeymoon to be a non-stop party? Then a New Orleans honeymoon is definitely a destination to consider! Of course, sampling all of the delicious cuisine and taking a stroll down Bourbon Street in the French Quarter are obvious activities, but there’s much more to the city than just beads and adult beverages. A swamp and bayou tour can be a unique adventure for outdoorsy couples, and couples who aren’t afraid of a little scare might enjoy a cemetery tour. Other areas to explore include Frenchmen Street and the Garden District, plus a trip to the National World War II Museum.

Outer Banks

Couples looking for a beach honeymoon but who don’t want to leave the country should definitely consider the Outer Banks of North Carolina—certainly one of our favorite honeymoon destinations in the South. With so many beaches, from Kitty Hawk to Duck, Southern Shores to Kill Devil Hills to Nags Head, there lots of opportunities for sun, surf, and relaxation.

Savannah is such a beautiful and romantic city—certainly ideal for a honeymoon destination. From Forsyth Park to shopping on Broughton Street to taking a riverboat cruise, there’s so much to do in Savannah. And don’t forget the amazing restaurants and many breweries in the area. If you’re interested in a day at the beach, visit nearby Tybee Island to take a dip in the ocean!
